TRAVELLER ETHNICITY CELEBRATION POSTPONED UNTIL 15 MARCH DUE TO FORTHCOMING BAD WEATHER

Organisers say public health and safety of paramount importance

The Traveller Ethnicity Celebration which was due to take place this coming Thursday, 1 March has been postponed until 15 March and will take place in the same venue, the Royal Hospital Kilmainham.

Speaking on behalf of the steering committee organising the event, Thomas McCann said that the decision to postpone the event was due to the Royal Hospital’s decision to close in light of the severe weather warnings that apply to Thursday.

“The Steering Committee organising the Traveller Ethnicity Celebration met this afternoon to consider the Royal Hospital’s decision to close this Thursday – the day upon which the Celebration was due to take place – due to the severe weather warnings that have been issued by Met Éireann. In the light of the Royal Hospital’s decision, we had no option but to postpone the event.”

Thomas McCann apologised to the hundreds of people who were planning on travelling from all over Ireland and abroad to the event, but said that it was in the best interests of public health and safety to postpone the event.

“We’ve spoken to the Royal Hospital Kilmainham and they have agreed to host the event for us on 15 March next. So the Traveller Ethnicity Celebration will be going ahead but two weeks later than originally planned and we’re very much looking forward to it,” Thomas McCann concluded.

QQI Level 3 course on Media Expression
We are looking at running a QQI Level 3 course on Media Expression starting from mid March and were hoping that you might help us by spreading the word so that more people know that we are running it.

During the course the learners will identify different forms of media outside the recognised mainstream and also how to decide which type of media works best to portray different messages.

The course is designed to show people how they can liaise with the media to highlight issues that affect them and advocate for change.

At the end of the course the learners will also, as a group, create a one hour speech based show around issues affecting the Travelling Community, at either a local or national level.

Trinity College Dublin together with the Irish Cancer Society and HSE are inviting women from the Liberties area of Dublin 8 and Charlemont//Rathmines areas of Dublin 2 & 6 to take part in a new community based study to help women quit smoking.

The aim of the study is to figure out the best way to support women to stop smoking by comparing two different programmes; a community stop smoking programme, which is specifically designed for women, and a HSE stop smoking service.

We are looking for 50 women, who currently smoke, to sign up and take part in this exciting new research study. Each participant will be allocated to either one of two community stop smoking programmes, which will both start early March. The research will take 12 weeks to complete.

At the end of the programme, information from all of the women will be examined to assess how effective each programme was in supporting them to stop smoking. Participants will be invited back to their community programme after 6 months to look at their progress, discuss how the programme worked for them and to monitor the long term benefits of taking part in the programme.

Your help in recruiting participants for the study by distributing information about the project in the above areas and identifying women who might be interested in participating would be much appreciated.

These are the contact details and links to further information for women who might be interested in the study:

If you have any questions about the study, please contact Dr Aurelia Ciblis at Tel: +353 (0)1 896 1385 or email: ciblisa@tcd.ie
